Updated Athletic COVID Guidelines

This week Dr. Ziegler shared new information regarding the CDC recommendations for isolation and quarantine for school.  There has also been changes to athletic participation guidelines which you will see below:

  • Case: Anyone who tested positive.  Must isolate 5 days from symptom onset or positive test date if asymptomatic.  Ex: Symptoms start on 1/5/22, can return on 1/11/22.  Must wear a well-fitting mask at all times days 6-10, and may attend practices and competitions but may not participate until after day 10.  Based on the 1/5/22 symptom/test date, they can remove their mask on 1/16/2022.  Symptomatic individuals may return after 5 days of isolation if symptoms are improved, and they have been free of fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.

  • Infectious period: The period of time someone is deemed infectious.  This begins 2 days before symptom onset, and lasts 10 days beyond symptom onset.  Ex: Symptoms begin 12/4/21, they are infectious starting 12/2/21.  They are infectious until 12/15/21.  Any interaction between those dates may produce close contacts

  • Close Contact: Anyone deemed to be within 6 feet for 15 cumulative minutes around an infectious case.  If there are multiple cases in one scenario, the 15 minutes is cumulative among all cases present.  LCPS will institute a five-day quarantine for all individuals identified as close contacts unless the student-athlete or staff member meets the following criteria listed below.  Individuals identified as close contacts who are asymptomatic and submit proof of one of the following may be readmitted to school or athletic participation immediately:
  • A vaccine booster
  • Two shots of the Moderna vaccine within the last 6 months
  • Two shots of the Pfizer vaccine within the last 5 months
  • One shot of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine within the last 2 months.

Individuals not meeting the criteria above must quarantine for 5 days, wear a well-fitting mask at all times days 6-10, and may attend practices and competitions but may not participate until after day 10.  Based on 1/5/22 positive test date, they can remove their mask on 1/16/2022.
